(NEWSER) - A New Jersey man yesterday became the first US citizen to sue the federal government for "rendition," the extrajudicial transfer of terrorism suspects between countries. Arrested in Kenya in 2007, Amir Meshal was secretly flown to Somalia, then to Ethiopia, where he claims US agents repeatedly threatened him with "torture, forced disappearance, and execution in order to coerce him to confess to wrongdoing in which he had not engaged," the Washington Post reports. Government fires on market as Somalia teeters on collapse

(NEWSER) - At least 10 people were killed and 35 seriously injured in Somalia’s capital yesterday as insurgents fired mortars at the presidential palace, where Somalia’s president and Ethiopia’s foreign minister were meeting. The government responded by firing artillery shells and mortar in the direction of the attack, a crowded Bakara market that has served as a rebel base, reports the New York Times. More»

Somali-born brothers overheard discussing methods and targets

(NEWSER) - Danish intelligence officials say they've arrested two brothers who were plotting an unspecified terrorist attack. The brothers, ages 18 and 23, were born in Somalia, but have spent most of their lives in Denmark and are Danish citizens. Authorities say they were overheard discussing methods, targets, and types of weaponry for an attack. One allegedly attended an al-Shabab training camp in Somalia, the AP reports. More»

FBI: Anarchists Tried to Trigger Fake Bombs

Five men arrested for bridge plot were once associated with Occupy Cleveland

(NEWSER) - The five men charged with plotting to blow up an Ohio bridge actually did attempt to detonate what they believed were real explosives, the FBI alleges. The men, unknowingly working with an FBI informant, repeatedly tried to use a text-message detonation code to blow up the fake bombs, which they had placed at the base of the bridge, the AP reports. They reportedly phoned the undercover FBI employee who provided the bombs to check the code when it failed. In another secretly recorded conversation, one of the suspects explained that "taking out a bridge in the business district would cost the ... corporate bigwigs a lot of money" because it would stop people from going to work.
