(NEWSER) - The governors of border states in the US and Mexico have been holding a conference to discuss cross-border issues every year for 30 years, but the tradition appears to be withering, the AP finds. US Troops Headed to Mexican Border

National Guard presence to be especially strong in Arizona

(NEWSER) - National Guard troops are headed to the Mexican border next month to beef up security along the border fence. As part of President Obama's new border plan, the 1,200 troops will spend a year in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, where they'll help border patrol agents monitor and prevent illegal border crossings, CNN reports. Calls funds for staffing, fence repairs an 'emergency'

(NEWSER) - With Arizona's controversial new anti-illegal-immigrant law being blamed on weak federal enforcement, Barack Obama has formally asked Nancy Pelosi for $600 million to beef up security along the US/Mexico border. The president says the request will address “urgent and essential needs” and should be considered an emergency. The money would be used to buy two security drones and hire 1,000 additional Border Patrol agents, along with more agents for ICE, the FBI and the DEA, the LA Times reports. More»

Massive Drug Tunnel Found Under Mexico Border

Elaborate smuggling tunnel to Arizona has electricity, ventilation system

(NEWSER) - The US Border Patrol has uncovered one of the biggest and most sophisticated smuggling tunnels under the Mexican border it has ever seen, CNN reports. The 83-foot tunnel to Arizona from Nogales, Mexico, was still under construction when it was found after a tipoff from somebody who heard construction sounds. Authorities believe the work was being financed by the Gulf Cartel of drug traffickers. More»

Latest casualties found near border city of Monterrey

(NEWSER) - Mexico today made the latest grisly discovery in its drug war: 49 bodies, some of which were mutilated, were dumped along a highway connecting the northern city of Monterrey with the US border, reports the AP . The 43 men and six women were found early this morning in the town of San Juan; officials have the road blocked off and are still investigating. More»
