(NEWSER) - The New York Post got a little excited on today's front page, promising a look "Inside Madoff’s Prison Hell." But that turns out to be a bit of wishful thinking: “Some of the guys were talking about smacking him around a little, just to get the notoriety of it,” says a source, but no beatdown actually occurred—and in fact, the Post reports, “he got a lot of respect from other inmates” for not being a snitch. Dharun Ravi Gets 30-Day Sentence

He declines to speak in sentencing hearing

(NEWSER) - After declining to speak on his own behalf, Dharun Ravi was sentenced to 30 days in jail today for spying on and allegedly outing gay roommate Tyler Clementi. Ravi "stared wide-eyed at the judge" as the sentence was read, but had no other reaction, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger . Ravi must report to jail on May 31, but in the meantime may return home. Judge Glenn Berman also said he would recommend Ravi not be deported. More»

CNN profiles a 28-year-old woman who has made it her life's mission to get these kids out of jail. Pushpa Basnet spearheads a group that has helped more than 100 imprisoned kids since 2005. Hispanics Now the Majority Sent to Federal Prison

Big demographic shift attributable to immigration offenses

(NEWSER) - With immigration offenses on the rise, more than half of those sent to federal prison for felonies this year are Hispanic. Though Hispanics already outnumbered other ethnic groups in that category, this is the first year they have been the majority of such offenders, the AP reports. A new government report shows that Hispanics made up 50.3% of people sentenced during the first nine months of this fiscal year, whites 26.4%, and blacks 19.7%.
