(NEWSER) - Burma today began releasing the 6,300 prisoners who will be granted amnesty, but so far the number of political detainees released does not come close to the estimated 2,000 who are in jail. (NEWSER) - The trial of Aung San Suu Kyi drew unusually strong condemnation from Asian leaders as it entered its second day today, the BBC reports. A statement from the ASEAN bloc urged Burma's ruling military junta to ensure the ailing 63-year-old was given proper medical care, repeated a call for her immediate release, and warned that the government's "honor and credibility" were at stake. (NEWSER) - Myanmar democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi is on trial today for breaking the conditions of her house arrest because an American "well wisher" entered her home. She planned to plead not guilty because the intruder was not invited, her attorney told the BBC. Suu Kyi has already spent 13 years in jail or under house arrest. If she's found guilty now she faces as much as another five years in detention and would remain out of sight during next year's elections. More»

Burma opposition leader getting top Amnesty honor

(NEWSER) - It'll be a busy week for Aung San Suu Kyi: On June 17, she's headed to Oslo to belatedly pick up the Nobel Peace Prize she was awarded in 1991. The next day, she heads to Dublin to receive Amnesty International's top honor, presented by Bono at a tribute concert; the event will also feature Vanessa Redgrave, Riverdance, and Bob Geldof, the AP reports. The Burma opposition leader was awarded the Ambassador of Conscience prize in 2009 but was unable to leave her country under its ruling junta. More»
