Executions surge in Middle East

(NEWSER) - Fewer countries than ever are executing people, but those countries are doing so with gusto, according to a new report from Amnesty International. Just 20 nations still use the death penalty. The US executed 43 people last year, making it 5th globally, and the only Western democracy on the list, the AP reports. “If you look at the company we're in globally, it's not the company we want to be in: China, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq,” said the executive director of Amnesty International USA. Troy Davis: I Want to Take a Polygraph Test

In effort to save him, Georgia Democrats urge prison strike

(NEWSER) - Troy Davis is hours from death, but he’s not giving up. The Georgia death row inmate, who claims he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989, wants to take a polygraph test. "Mr. Davis believes he is innocent and he wants to show it," his lawyer said late last night. Davis is not yet cleared by the Department of Corrections to take the polygraph test, but his lawyer said the legal team will be at the state prison this morning with a polygraph examiner. Davis will only take the three-hour test if the parole board will take it into consideration, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. More»

Akmal Shaikh, said to be mentally ill, dies by firing squad

(NEWSER) - Despite protests from the British government and human-rights activists worldwide, China today executed by firing squad a Briton convicted of smuggling drugs into the country. Supporters say Akmal Shaikh, 53, had bipolar disorder; the Foreign Office’s complaint centered on concerns China had not taken those issues into account in condemning him to death. Shaikh was caught with nearly 9 pounds of heroin, Chinese officials say, noting that possession of about 1.8 ounces is enough to incur the death penalty. More»
