(NEWSER) - A California woman is turning to the state legislature for help after she was ordered to pay alimony to the ex-husband convicted of sexually assaulting her. Crystal Harris, 39, told the judicial committee of the State Assembly yesterday that the 2010 court judgment "amounted to making a rape victim write a check to her own rapist every month." Assembly member Toni Atkins has introduced a bill that would keep any victim of a violent sex crime from having to pay alimony to the abusive former spouse. "Most logical people hear this and think, 'You've got to be kidding,' " Atkins tells ABC News . "It makes a mockery of the intent of laws that govern a fair division of assets." More»

Man Busted in 2 Sex Assaults at Wall Street Camp

Teens assaulted in tents: police

(NEWSER) - A Brooklyn man has been arrested for two sex assaults on teenagers at the Occupy Wall Street camp in Zuccotti Park. One of the victims, 18, reported to police she was raped in a tent in the camp; a 17-year-old protester said she was groped in her tent. Tony Iketubosin, 26, has been charged with third-degree sex abuse in that incident, and still faces charges in the rape, police told the Wall Street Journal . Medical Student Charged With Killing 14 Dogs

Cops respond after tip that Italian greyhounds were disappearing

(NEWSER) - A Michigan medical student is being charged with torturing and killing up to 14 dogs he purchased in the last nine months. Police checked on David Thompson, 24, after a tipster complained that he was bringing in a large number of dogs, mostly Italian greyhounds, that were never seen again. The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine suspended Thompson last week when the first charges surfaced . Thompson is currently in jail, struggling to come up with his $100,000 bail. If convicted, he faces up to 4 years in prison on each of the 14 charges against him, reports WLNS . More»

Puppies Left to Die in Suitcase Reunited

Seven survived cupboard ordeal

(NEWSER) - Newborn puppies locked in a suitcase and left to die in a cupboard have been reunited big, happy, and healthy. It was too late to save five of the black-and-white mixed breed pups when British animal control officers discovered them in a breeder's home. But seven survivors were nursed back to health and adopted by loving homes, and the new owners held a reunion party, reuniting the dogs for the first time since their ordeal more than two years ago. The breeder has been banned from ever owning animals, and was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison, reports the Telegraph . More»
