Legislation could cost heavy drinkers hundreds per year

(NEWSER) - Britain's heaviest drinkers could soon find themselves paying an extra $200 a year for booze. Despite resistance from his health secretary—and despite his own limited-government philosophy—David Cameron is today announcing a plan to set a minimum price of 40p, or about 63 cents, per unit of alcohol, the Guardian reports. The prime minister also plans to bar supermarkets from some bulk deals on drinks. The Guardian found that would raise the price of 20 cans of Stella Artois (the equivalent of 44 units of booze) at one store from $16 to $28. More»

(NEWSER) - With Chinese tourism to the UK booming, a developer is planning a resort village aimed at their specific needs. But it's not exactly a stone's throw from London's attractions: Instead, it's calling itself "just three hours away" in Wales. Pantglas Estate would house a 92-bedroom hotel and 80 cottages, with signage in Mandarin and English and staff knowledgeable about Chinese culture, the Telegraph reports. More»

(NEWSER) - A 7-year-old boy in Boston has been accused of sexual harassment, but his mother says he was just defending himself from a bully, reports the Boston Globe . The boy's mother says the incident happened on the school bus last month, when a bully choked her son, Mark, and stole his gloves. Mark, while trying to defend himself, kicked the bully in the testicles. “I think my kid was right to fight back,’’ says Tasha Lynch. “He wasn’t doing anything except protecting himself." More»
