Music profs resign in separate incident

(NEWSER) - Florida A&M band members will be hit with criminal charges today following a six-month investigation into the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion . The charges come as two music professors at the school have had to resign over alleged involvement in another hazing incident, their lawyer says. A student accused professors Anthony Simons and Diron Holloway of beating him and other band fraternity members in a 2010 hazing incident at Holloway's house. The charges in Champion's death follow earlier charges in December against three band members in the beating of a female peer, the New York Times reports. More»

Now that millions of people have downloaded encrypted information like credit card and bank account numbers onto the Internet, a team of mathematicians and cryptographers have located a crucial flaw in online encryption. The flaw concerns the way the system generates random numbers to create a code critical to protecting digital information. In the system, randomly-generated prime numbers are used to create a public "key," which is used in a formula to encrypt information. The original, randomly generated numbers are kept secret. But in a small but significant number of cases, the random-number key generation system failed to work properly. The researchers found in certain cases that numbers were not truly random, making it possible to determine the secret keys used to generate the public key. "I would absolutely give up my girlfriend for him," one respondent said. "I know it sounds insane but I've had numerous relationships with women. My dog has never let me down."
