Iran Reportedly Jails Mousavi

Tehran formally detains opposition leaders, wives

(NEWSER) - Iran is cracking down on its opposition today, jailing prominent leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, reports the AP. The pair and their wives were arrested and taken to Tehran's Heshmatiyeh jail, according to reformist website Kaleme.com. The two have been under house arrest for two weeks for encouraging public protests in the wake of the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings. The raucous protests are "a testament to the courage of the Iranian people, and an indictment of the hypocrisy of the Iranian regime—a regime which has constantly hailed what went on in Egypt," Clinton said yesterday. "There needs to be a commitment to open up the political system in Iran, to hear the voices of the opposition." (NEWSER) - You weren't imagining things when you saw a dog trotting around downtown Athens this week as riots raged around him. The tawny shorthaired mutt has turned up in a surprising number of images over the past couple of years, reports the Guardian , which IDs the dog as Kanellos.
