(NEWSER) - No surprise that a lot of media outlets tried to butter up Mark Sanford’s aides in order to win interviews with the governor when he was AWOL in Argentina. But their emails, obtained by the State, show the lengths they were willing to go to, some coming about as close as you can get to promising to put a positive spin on what turned out to be a major scandal. “You know that you will be on friendly ground here!” gushes a Washington Times staffer to a Sanford rep. “I’ve already have calls from others who want to bash,” notes a local TV host. “I’m not doing that!” More»

(AP) - Here we go again: A South Carolina lobbyist resigned from a rival political campaign yesterday and then became the second man to claim he had a tryst with Nikki Haley . Lobbyist Larry Marchant says he and Haley, who's running for governor, had a "one night indiscretion" in a Salt Lake City hotel room in June 2008, but admitted he had no proof to back up his allegation. The South Carolina governor announced during an unrelated news conference that he spent the weekend with the Argentine lover who cost him his marriage and nearly his job, reports the State . Sanford Will Pay $74K Fine to End SC Ethics Case

Governor also will shell out $66K for other expenses

(NEWSER) - Without admitting any guilt, Gov. Mark Sanford agreed today to pay a $74,000 fine to end South Carolina’s ethics case against him. The state’s ethics panel began its investigation after Sanford’s affair with a woman in Argentina was revealed last June; the Republican will also pay more than $66,000 to cover costs of that probe, plus pay South Carolina back for various travel costs, the State reports.
