People can pick up on male sexual orientation based solely on how men pronounce the letters a, e, i, o, and u, reports US News . Researchers at Ohio State University conducted a study to see whether strangers could tell if males were gay or straight just by hearing them pronounce single-syllable words such as "food" and "sell." MIT students identified gay men using sexuality of online friends

(NEWSER) - Students at MIT designed a program that allowed them to identify gay men using their Facebook friends' sexual preferences, and the results are sparking debate about online privacy, the Boston Globe reports. The "Gaydar" project looked at the “interested in” field and tabulated the number of gay friends for males who did not disclose their sexuality. Though ethical considerations prevented full verification, the program was correct for every individual whose sexual orientation the students knew independently. More»

Group wants students expelled by 'secret court' in 1920 recognized

(NEWSER) - In 1920, seven students were expelled from Harvard University because they were gay or thought to be gay—and now a group of students and faculty wants the school to award the seven with posthumous degrees. The group also wants Harvard to formally abolish its "secret court," the group of administrators who investigated possibly homosexual students in 1920, which only became public in 2002 when a student reporter discovered the "court" and its expulsion of the seven students. (NEWSER) - The true number remains elusive, but one demographer estimates that more than 9 million Americans—roughly the population of New Jersey—are gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Gary Gates averaged the results of five US surveys conducted between 2004 and 2009 to find that 3.5% of Americans identify themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, he says in a report released today. Ark. School Board Member Wishes All Gays Would Die

Clint McCance's Facebook post gets him unwanted national attention

(NEWSER) - An Arkansas school board member is under fire after apparently posting a message on his Facebook profile declaring his wish that all gay people commit suicide. "Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide," wrote Clint McCance, according to The Advocate . Later, responding to commenters (some of whom supported his position), McCance added, "I like that f*gs cant procreate. I also enjoy the fact that they often give each other aids and die." More»
