WPS suspends play while it battles a team owner in court

(NEWSER) - The thrill of victory was quickly followed by the agony of defeat for US women soccer players this week. The good news: They won a berth in the London Olympics. The bad: The 2012 season of the Women's Professional Soccer League has been canceled. At issue is a legal battle with a controversial owner of one of the teams. Dan Borislow, who made a fortune with his magicJack Internet phone system, was bounced from the league at the end of last season. He's fighting that decision in court, and WPS officials are suspending this year's season to "address the legal issues head-on before moving forward with competition," according to a statement. Japan's victory over the US hit 7,196 tweets per second

(NEWSER) - No matter how you regard the pace of soccer, there's no denying that tweeting about it can be fast and furious. The all-time record for number of tweets per second was set at the end of yesterday's Women's World Cup final—taking the top spot from the last, somewhat unexpected Twitter mega-event: the 6,939 tweets per second that came as Japan rang in 2011. At the end of the final game between the US and Japan, tweeters cranked out a record 7,196 tweets per second. More»
