(AP) - An Afghan soldier has killed one US Marine and wounded another before being shot to death in return fire in southern Afghanistan in the latest in a series of attacks against foreigners blamed on government forces working with coalition troops. Yesterday's attack in Helmand province was among nearly 20 this year that have raised the level of mistrust between the US-led coalition and their Afghan partners as NATO gears up to hand over security to local forces ahead of a 2014 deadline for the withdrawal of combat troops. Marines Open Infantry School to Women

Female volunteers will head to officer training facility for first time

(NEWSER) - For the first time ever, women will be permitted to train as infantry combat officers in the Marine Corps, reports the Military Times , which calls the move "monumental." Until now, women have largely been relegated to support roles such as personnel administration and aircraft maintenance. An unknown number of female volunteers will head to the Infantry Officers Course in Quantico, Virginia, this year, where they will learn to command troops in battle. More»

8 Women Sue Military for 'High Tolerance' of Rape

They say they were raped, sexually harassed

(NEWSER) - Eight current and former servicewomen have filed a lawsuit against the US military, saying that they suffered rape, sexual harassment, and other abuse, and that reporting it to their superiors brought retaliation. The suit, which names past and current leaders up to and including Leon Panetta, says the military has a "high tolerance for sexual predators in their ranks," according to the AP . Of the eight women, seven say a comrade raped or attempted to sexually assault them. One is a current active-duty Marine, the rest are veterans. More»

Marine Corps Snipers Posed With Nazi Logo

Scout sharpshooters stood with flag whose logo resembles that of SS

(NEWSER) - In what commanders say was the result of an ignorance of history, not racism, Marine Corps scout snipers in Afghanistan apparently adopted the logo of the Nazi SS. The military launched an investigation after a photo surfaced in November of snipers posing with what looks like the logo of the Nazi special unit responsible for killing millions. Probers determined there was no malicious intent—Marines believed the SS symbol was meant to represent "sniper scouts"—although the logo had apparently been used for years, reports AP . The Marines involved were not disciplined, and the incident is now being used as a training tool, says a military spokeswoman. More»

Marine Gets 30 Days in Hazing Death

Jacob Jacoby admitted to punching, kicking fellow Marine Harry Lew

(NEWSER) - Lance Cpl. Jacob Jacoby admitted to punching and kicking fellow Marine Harry Lew before Lew committed suicide , and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Jacoby, who pleaded guilty to assault, will also see his rank reduced to private first class. Prosecutors withdrew additional charges that Jacoby threatened and humiliated Lew, and the judge in Jacoby's court-martial says she saw no evidence that Jacoby's actions caused Lew's suicide. Two others who are accused in the hazing case also face court-martials, the AP reports. More»
