(NEWSER) - Troy Davis was put to death by lethal injection last night after the US Supreme Court refused to stop his execution in Georgia. Davis' attorneys made the last-ditch plea after all other options were exhausted. Davis, who was convicted of killing off-duty police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989 but protested his innocence until the end, was pronounced dead at 11:08pm, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . The case received international attention, with everyone from Jimmy Carter to the pope to Amnesty International calling for his sentence to be commuted. More»

(NEWSER) - Troy Davis is hours from death, but he’s not giving up. The Georgia death row inmate, who claims he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989, wants to take a polygraph test. "Mr. Davis believes he is innocent and he wants to show it," his lawyer said late last night. Davis is not yet cleared by the Department of Corrections to take the polygraph test, but his lawyer said the legal team will be at the state prison this morning with a polygraph examiner. Davis will only take the three-hour test if the parole board will take it into consideration, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. More»

(NEWSER) - Former FBI chief William Sessions joins those pleading with Georgia to call off next week's execution of Troy Davis, a death row inmate convicted of killing a police officer in 1989. "Serious questions about Mr. Davis' guilt, highlighted by witness recantations, allegations of police coercion, and a lack of relevant physical evidence, continue to plague his conviction," writes Sessions in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . Supreme Court Won't Spare Beltway Sniper

Execution set for tomorrow as request for more time fails

(NEWSER) - The Supreme Court has rejected an emergency appeal from John Allen Muhammad, also known as the Beltway sniper, clearing the way for his execution tomorrow. Muhammad’s lawyers said he needed more time to prepare his appeals. Although justices Stevens, Ginsburg, and Sotomayor questioned Virginia law for not affording convicts a year to file appeals, they found no reason to make an exception for Muhammad, the Los Angeles Times reports.
