(NEWSER) - The VFW is stirring up quite a bit of controversy—no, not Veterans of Foreign Wars, but Veterans for Weed. In addition to co-opting the VFW acronym, the pro-marijuana-legalization group also uses a logo that looks like the POW/MIA icon, except with the soldier smoking a joint. The real VFW has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the group, and because "VFW" is copyrighted, the tokers may have to comply with the acronym part. But it has no intention of ditching its controversial logo, Military Times reports. More»

Vietnam Vets: Fix Memorial's Misspelled Name

Their ally wasn't called 'Shephen'

(NEWSER) - A pair of Vietnam veterans have a problem with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington: It lists their ally, Stephen Hiett Phillips, as "Shephen." "One doesn't honor a person by misspelling their name," says one member of Phillips' regiment. The mistake appears to be the result of a misspelling on a 1967 list of casualties, the News-Leader reports. But the veterans' efforts to contact officials about the error have resulted in "total, absolute frustration." More»

(NEWSER) - For its oldest runner, the Boston Marathon is no big deal: Clarence Hartley may be 81, but he’s fought in two wars—Korea and Vietnam—and conquered both non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and prostate cancer. He easily qualified for the race, beating his age and gender's required time of 5:00 by 21 minutes. Bravery in Laos was a secret for decades

(NEWSER) - President Obama awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor today for an act of bravery the military had covered up for decades. Chief Master Sgt. Richard Etchberger was killed while helping three wounded comrades onto an evacuation helicopter during an attack on a US outpost in Laos. But for years, the event was kept under wraps because the US was not officially supposed to be in Laos, USA Today explains. More»
