(NEWSER) - One thing hasn't changed in the dynamic of the two Koreas: The North wants its richer neighbor to pump in much-needed cash in the form of investments, reports the New York Times . The head of North Korea's parliament today pressed the issue when speaking with Lee Hee-ho, the widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who paid a visit to offer her condolences. The two nations actually had a deal in place a few years ago for such investments, but it got scotched by the South in 2008 over the North's nuclear program. More»

Heads one of two private mourning delegations from Seoul

(NEWSER) - South Korea's 89-year-old former first lady is in Pyongyang meeting with the North's new 20-something "Supreme Commander," reports the BBC . Lee Hee-Ho, the wife of late President Kim Dae-Jung, headed one of two delegations South Korea allowed to visit Pyongyang to pay respects to Kim's late father, Kim Jong Il. Lee met with the younger Kim briefly, for about 10 minutes, according to the South's unification ministry. "As chairman Kim Jong Il sent a condolence delegation to Seoul when my husband passed away in 2009; I believe it is our duty to express our condolences," said Lee. More»

North Korea warns neighbor: Allow citizens to attend funeral

(NEWSER) - Kim Jong Il’s death is leading to more tension between the Koreas: North Korea warned its neighbor today that it must “show proper respect” over Kim’s death by allowing citizens to attend his funeral. The statement accused South Korea of “insult and mockery” because it expressed sympathy over the North Korean leader’s death but will not send an official delegation to his funeral. The New York Times notes that the North has promised to open its air and land border to allow South Korean funeral-goers into the country. More»
