(NEWSER) - The true number remains elusive, but one demographer estimates that more than 9 million Americans—roughly the population of New Jersey—are gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Gary Gates averaged the results of five US surveys conducted between 2004 and 2009 to find that 3.5% of Americans identify themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, he says in a report released today. Clint McCance's Facebook post gets him unwanted national attention

(NEWSER) - An Arkansas school board member is under fire after apparently posting a message on his Facebook profile declaring his wish that all gay people commit suicide. "Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide," wrote Clint McCance, according to The Advocate . Later, responding to commenters (some of whom supported his position), McCance added, "I like that f*gs cant procreate. I also enjoy the fact that they often give each other aids and die." More»

(NEWSER) - As a 17-year-old gay teen, Tim Gunn tried to commit suicide. He tells this story in the above video to send a message to gay youth: It gets better. Gunn is the latest celebrity to film such a video for sex columnist Dan Savage’s “ It Gets Better ” project. Others made videos on their own, with many urging gay teens to call The Trevor Project for support, in light of the recent string of suicides related to bullying. People can determine sexual orientation by listening, says study

(NEWSER) - If high-tech gaydar equipment existed, you probably wouldn't need it. People can pick up on male sexual orientation based solely on how men pronounce the letters a, e, i, o, and u, reports US News . Researchers at Ohio State University conducted a study to see whether strangers could tell if males were gay or straight just by hearing them pronounce single-syllable words such as "food" and "sell." Participants got it right 75% of the time once they heard a vowel. More»
