'Clunkers' Ends Monday

(NEWSER) - The final numbers for the Cash for Clunkers are in, and they’re pretty rosy, the Los Angeles Times reports. Some Republicans were ready to let GM, Chrysler die: Jonathan Cohn

(NEWSER) - Barack Obama reportedly plans to make the auto bailout a key part of his reelection campaign, and Jonathan Cohn of the New Republic thinks that’s a great idea. Revenue climbs 35% as Big Three return to profitablility

(NEWSER) - Good news for Detroit: The Big Three automakers are all profitable once again. Chrysler has reported its first net profit since leaving bankruptcy nearly two years ago, with a net income of $116 million in the first quarter. The firm saw revenue jump 35% to $13.1 billion compared to Q1 of 2010, with worldwide vehicle sales hitting 394,000, an 18% rise. Chrysler has seen operating profits over the past few quarters, but it was still losing money overall due to the hefty interest payments (to the tune of $348 million in Q1) on its $7.5 billion in US and Canadian government loans, the Wall Street Journal reports. Trade in program generated roughly 542,000 sales

(NEWSER) - Cash for Clunkers was far more effective than anyone is giving it credit for, says a new study from Maritz Automotive Research Group. In their survey, 90% of program participants say they wouldn’t have purchased a new car without the government incentive—a far higher percentage than previous estimates. The group also notes that, while sales dipped immediately after the program ended, they remained higher than they had been before it. More»

Automaker nabs car, truck of the year

(NEWSER) - Ford vehicles won both car and truck of the year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, cementing the carmaker's dominance over its domestic competition. The Fusion Hybrid snagged car of the year, and the company copped truck of the year for the second consecutive year with the Transit Connect. Ford was the only American auto firm to gain market share in 2009, CNNMoney reports. More»
