Connecticut Dem second senator to eschew re-election bid in 24 hours

(NEWSER) - Embattled Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd plans to announce today that he will not seek re-election this year, ending a 30-year Senate career, according to Democratic sources. Dodd joins Sen. Byron Dorgan who announced his exit less than 24 hours ago, and Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, expected to do the same today. Dodd has been trailing in the polls, and his resignation is expected to give the Democrats a better chance of keeping the seat, the Washington Post reports. More»

Reid engineers deal for vote tomorrow, beating recess deadline

(NEWSER) - The Senate has reached a deal to extend the "cash for clunkers" program through Labor Day, the Detroit News reports. Majority leader Harry Reid capped days of arm-twisting with an announcement tonight that the chamber will vote tomorrow on a measure adding $2 billion to the unexpectedly popular program. The agreement with Republican opponents of the legislation "accomplishes what we need to accomplish," Reid said. More»

They agree to allow the bill onto the floor for debate

(NEWSER) - The three-day standoff over the financial reform bill is over in the Senate. Now the real fight begins. Republicans dropped their filibuster and allowed the bill to proceed to the floor for debate instead of blocking it a fourth time. Talks to forge a bipartisan deal behind closed doors apparently had gone as far as they were going to go, and when Harry Reid called for the bill to proceed by unanimous consent this evening, nobody objected, reports the New York Times .
