Good Morning America gig ends in prep for World News transition

(NEWSER) - Diane Sawyer announced today that this will be her last week on Good Morning America , after 10 years and “2,881 shows—roughly,” she said. Diane Sawyer will take over as nightly news anchor in January

(NEWSER) - Charles Gibson will step down as ABC’s World News anchor at year's end, and Diane Sawyer will take the top slot, Broadcasting & Cable reports. In an email to the staff, Gibson explains that he had earlier hoped to retire from his post at Good Morning America in 2007, but "but with Peter's illness, Bob's injuries, and Elizabeth's pregnancy," he was asked to anchor World News in 2006. (NEWSER) - Former Today show anchor Bryant Gumbel was "embarrassed" when NBC named Sarah Palin co-host for a day last week. Hosts “used to be judged not just on their popularity, but the extent to which they were capable of interviewing someone or reporting on a situation, or able to have a degree of gravitas," Gumbel grumbled to Newsweek media critic Howard Kurtz. (NEWSER) - Katie Couric and Sarah Palin again go mano a mano this morning in a manufactured media war, and Palin's looking to win this round in her debut as co-host of the Today show . With Couric guest-hosting the competition over at Good Morning America, Matt Lauer razzed Palin yesterday by asking if she's been reading any newspapers to prepare.
