(NEWSER) - Almost a quarter of America's 3,142 counties are slowly dying, according to the US Census Bureau. Some 760 counties are now recording more deaths than births, census figures show, and what demographers call "natural decrease" is accelerating as the downturn pushes birth rates down and forces young people to move to where the jobs are. "Dying counties" can be found all over the country, from the Rust Belt to rural areas in the South, and even in some parts of fast-growing California. More»

(NEWSER) - The Census Bureau will announce its new population figures tomorrow, and Republicans will likely be fans of the numbers. Based on the figures, as many as 18 states could see their number of congressional districts and representatives change, a political consultant tells NPR . Texas is set to gain three Congressional seats, Florida could gain two, and other Southern and Western states could pick up one. New York and Ohio may each lose two seats. (NEWSER) - The South is gaining population and power at the expense of the Northeast and Midwest, according to Census Bureau estimates released yesterday. If House seats were distributed based on the estimates, which are believed to be a strong predictor of the 2010 census results, Texas would be the big winner, gaining three seats, with Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington each adding one. (NEWSER) - The recession has turned migration patterns on their heads in the last year. So-called magnet states in the West and South aren't so magnetic anymore, with Florida and Nevada starkly illustrating the trend. Earlier this decade, they both topped the growth charts, but now see more people on the way out than on the way in. Ponzi Lawyer Arrested, Pleads Not Guilty

Scott Rothstein faces up to 100 years in prison

(NEWSER) - Federal agents arrested runaway attorney Scott Rothstein in Fort Lauderdale this morning, charging him with racketeering and other crimes that could land him in prison for up to 100 years. Hours later Rothstein appeared in court and pleaded not guilty. The disbarred lawyer is accused of running a $1.2 billion Ponzi scam, telling clients they were buying shares of future settlements in what turned out to be imaginary lawsuits. More»
