(AP) - No last-minute Capitol Hill surprises: Congress today passed legislation renewing a payroll tax cut for 160 million workers and jobless benefits for millions more, backing the main items on President Obama's jobs agenda in a rare burst of Washington bipartisanship. The Senate approved the $143 billion measure by a 60-36 vote. That tally came minutes after the House approved it by a sweeping 293-132 vote. Obama is expected to sign it into law shortly after returning from a West Coast fundraising swing. More»

Measure can't overcome filibuster

(NEWSER) - No Senate miracle for the president's $447 billion jobs bill. As expected , the measure failed to advance in the chamber this evening, reports the Hill . All Republicans and two Democrats (Ben Nelson and Jon Tester) joined together in a filibuster, leaving the measure well short of the necessary 60 votes to advance. (Several other centrist Democrats said they opposed the bill, even though they voted against the filibuster.) What next? Pressure on Senate leaders to find a way

(NEWSER) - With all eyes on the Senate this weekend, one name keeps cropping up as pivotal deal-maker: Mitch McConnell. Politico and the Wall Street Journal see the Senate minority leader as key to any potential compromise that could be struck as Harry Reid's bill winds through the Senate. As Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin puts it, “What these senators on the Republican side are waiting for is a permission slip from Sen. McConnell.” The Washington Post says McConnell is ticked because President Obama rejected a potential compromise last week and is insisting that the White House be at the table in weekend talks.
