Nelson Grant Hallahan, 65, and wife Janet Hallahan, 54, were arrested in a small town in Phoenix after a tipoff was received the day after they were featured on America's Most Wanted, reports the AP . (AP) - Texas tycoon R. Allen Stanford, whose financial empire once spanned the Americas, was convicted today on all but one of the 14 counts he faced for allegedly bilking investors out of more than $7 billion in a massive Ponzi scheme he operated for 20 years. Jurors reached their verdicts against Stanford during their fourth day of deliberation, finding him guilty on all charges except a single count of wire fraud. More»

(NEWSER) - Bernie Madoff's historic Ponzi scheme is finally dragging the New York Mets to court. A judge ruled today that the team's owners must return up to $83 million withdrawn from Madoff's firm and go to trial over whether they ignored warning signs of the investment scam, MarketWatch reports. Irving Picard, the trustee appointed to recoup funds for the Ponzi scheme's victims, claims the Mets owners were "willfully blind" to Madoff's fraud. More»

(NEWSER) - The receiver in charge of recovering money for R. Allen Stanford's fleeced investors is trying to recover some $1.8 million the alleged Ponzi schemer gave to a host of political causes—but they refuse to return the money, Reuters reports. Among the holdouts: President Obama's campaign, and most of the Democrat and Republican parties' national fundraising committees, along with a who's who of other prominent individual politicians. Prison evaluators say he's performing so badly on tests, he can't be trying

(NEWSER) - R. Allen Stanford is only pretending to have amnesia, prosecutors told a judge yesterday, urging him to declare the alleged Ponzi schemer fit to stand trial. Stanford's trial has been on hold since January, when doctors testified that he might have suffered a brain injury in a prison brawl. But prosecutors are citing a new prison evaluation that concluded that Stanford was performing so poorly on his neuropsychological tests that he must be "blatantly simulating cognitive defects."
