UK Unemployment Soars to 14-Year High

Jobless rate expected to keep rising despite signs of economic recovery

(AP) - Employers hired only 54,000 new workers in May, the fewest in eight months, and the unemployment rate rose to 9.1%. The Labor Department report offers startling evidence that the US economy is slowing, hampered by high gas prices and natural disasters in Japan that have hurt US manufacturers. The Wall Street Journal notes that 160,000 jobs were expected to be created and the unemployment rate was expected to fall to 8.9%. (NEWSER) - The US recession is over—at least, for businesses. US workers are still mired in it. Unlike its economic competitors, America's profits have bounced back to above 2007 levels, but the unemployment rate is higher than in Britain or Russia and much higher than in Germany, Japan, or China, notes David Leonhardt at the New York Times . (USER SUBMITTED) - The US has in 2010 added 613,000 jobs as of September—a not-so-bad average of 68,111 per month. But at that rate, it will be 2020 before the US regains the 8.36 million total jobs lost in the Great Recession. That would break the post-WWII record of 47 months to gain back lost jobs set in the 2001 recession, reports Investor Business Daily. (NEWSER) - A lot of unemployed Americans over 50 are getting the unhappy sense that they may as well kiss the workforce goodbye—nobody is going to hire them again. Blame the fact that the recovery is so sluggish. At the current rate it will take as long as 8 years for the nearly 15 million jobless to get reabsorbed, and with younger people looking more attractive to employers, older folks are likely to age out before their turn comes.
