(NEWSER) - The H1N1 swine flu virus has reemerged in Egypt, infecting 1,172 people and killing 56 since Oct. 8, Reuters reports. Some 16,373 have been infected in the country, with 281 deaths, since it was first reported there in June 2009. (NEWSER) - When the Egyptian government decided to kill all of Cairo’s pigs last spring in a pre-emptive measure to combat swine flu, they apparently forgot that the pigs performed a vital function in a city with poor public services: eating trash, the New York Times reports. The zabaleen, Cairo’s Christian minority, used to collect trash door-to-door, selling recyclables and feeding the organic waste to their pigs. (NEWSER) - The Egyptian government says it will immediately slaughter the country’s entire population of 300,000 pigs to protect against the swine flu, the AP reports. Egypt has stressed that it has no reported cases of the virus, though two infections have been confirmed in neighboring Israel. Security forces do nothing to break up conflict

(NEWSER) - Clashes broke out in Cairo this morning between protesters railing against Egypt's ruling military council and people that those protesters described as "thugs," leaving 11 dead and more than 160 wounded. Reuters reports that the military's supporters were armed, and the New York Times says that security forces did nothing for hours to stop the fighting. The incident prompted two top candidates in the upcoming presidential election to suspend their campaigns in solidarity, and pushed back the first planned presidential debate. More»

(AP) - Hundreds of Egyptian soldiers swept into Cairo's Tahrir Square today, chasing protesters and beating them to the ground with sticks in the second day of a violent crackdown on anti-military protesters that has left nine dead and about 300 injured. The violent, chaotic scenes have brought to the fore the simmering tensions between the ruling military council that took power after Hosni Mubarak's ouster and activists demanding the generals transfer power immediately to civilians.
