Josh Brolin and Megan Fox are stuck in a badly executed flop

(NEWSER) - Critics pretty much hate Jonah Hex, the new Westernish flick with Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, and John Malkovich.

• Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times : A "smoldering ash heap. ... Brolin's intermittent voice-over narration proves to be the most powerful stuff, with the rest curiously sputtering."
• Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune : "Industrially processed entertainment at it cheapest, nastiest and greasiest."

Bigger, longer, dumber sequel is less than meets the eye

(NEWSER) - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen doesn't skimp on the special effects, say critics, but it lacks the clever touches of its predecessor and the mammoth 2.5 hour running time is likely to give all but the biggest fans metal fatigue.

• Joe Lozito, Big Picture Big Sound: "This robot-on-robot sequel is a pointless, messy assault on the senses. The special effects, of course, are flawless. The rest is scrap metal."

Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones return for alien flick

(NEWSER) - Sure, no one was that desperate for a Men in Black 3—but it's actually a pretty good summer movie. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back defending the planet from aliens, and this time, Josh Brolin's along for the ride as a young Jones.

• The movie "turns out to be so much fun," writes AO Scott in the New York Times . While it "carefully fulfills its blockbuster imperatives—with chases and explosions and elaborately contrived plot twists—it swerves into some marvelously silly, unexpectedly witty, and genuinely fresh territory."

No. 1 spot goes to Bar Refaeli

(NEWSER) - Bar Refaeli is No. 1 on this year's Maxim Hot 100 , but No. 92 is arguably more interesting: It's Foxy Knoxy herself, Amanda Knox. She's probably the most controversial entry, but the list also contains a cartoon character (Family Guy's Lois Griffin) and a man (Stephen Colbert, whose fans apparently staged a write-in campaign). Side note: Kim Kardashian didn't make it on Maxim's list, but she was voted "Hottest Woman in the World" by Zoo magazine ... which, sadly, is not actually a magazine about zoo animals. Johnny Depp stars in Tim Burton film

(NEWSER) - Critics aren't thrilled with Tim Burton's latest offering, inspired by the late-1960s cult TV show of the same name and starring Johnny Depp as an 18th-century vampire who is buried alive, only to be accidentally dug up in 1972. The film isn't sure what it wants to be:

• Dark Shadows "tries to serve too many masters," writes Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News . "Initially it’s an epic valentine to the show. Then it’s a vamp-out-of-water story. Soon it’s a gung-ho comedy. Finally it's a monster flick." Still, it "unearths enough fun."
