Buried in 96-minute diatribe was a smart UN reform proposal

(NEWSER) - His swine flu conspiracy theories and who-shot-JFK musings may have got the headlines, but Moammar Gadhafi actually made a few good points during his 96-minute monologue at the UN General Assembly, blogs Gideon Rachman. The Libyan colonel is totally right that the Security Council is outdated and doesn't represent the world well, and he accurately outlined the difficulties of reform: offer one country a seat and another pops right up. (AP) - In his first appearance at the UN, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi blasted the Security Council and called for the end of the five permanent members' veto power. He also wants to expand the group with additional member states to make it more representative. "It should not be called the Security Council, it should be called the 'terror council,'" said Gadhafi in a rambling speech, during which he quoted from the UN charter. Former Cuban leader calls Obama's UN speech 'gibberish'

The former Cuban leader spoke out against President Obama's address to the UN in an opinion column published on a Cuban government website today, calling it "gibberish" and referring to NATO’s actions in Libya as "genocide" and a "monstrous crime." Castro had not written one of his so-called "reflections" since early July, prompting rumors of declining health, but in today’s piece he was back to form, blasting what he calls the US' hypocritical behavior. New leaders promise interim government in coming week

(AP) - With NATO jets roaring overhead, revolutionary forces fought their way into Moammar Gadhafi's hometown today in the first significant push into the stubborn stronghold in about a week. Libya's new leaders also tried to move on the political front, promising to announce in the coming week a new interim government that it hopes will help unite the country.
