Retailer continues push to, apparently, take over everything

(NEWSER) - Walmart: First it replaced your bank , now it wants to replace your doctor. The retailer says it intends to "dramatically ... lower the cost of healthcare ... by becoming the largest provider of primary healthcare services in the nation," according to a recent request for information sent to potential health partners. The request (which, NPR notes, came during the same week Walmart announced it was slashing employee health insurance benefits ) indicates that the company plans to offer a very broad range of healthcare services in-store, overseeing patients with conditions ranging from diabetes to depression to HIV. Walmart Slashes Health Care Benefits

Cites concerns over rising costs

(NEWSER) - America’s largest employer is scaling back its health benefits, jacking up premiums for full-time workers by as much as 40% and eliminating coverage altogether for many part-timers, Walmart told employees this week. The company blamed rising costs for the move, telling the New York Times that it has nothing to do with the new health care reform law. “The decisions made were not easy,” a spokesman said, “but they strike a balance between managing costs and providing quality care.” From now on, employees who work less than 24 hours a week on average won’t be eligible for coverage. New hires who work between 24 and 33 hours will qualify, but won’t be allowed to add a spouse to the plan (kids, however, can be added). More»

(NEWSER) - Michelle Obama is taking her next shot at obesity, calling on the National Restaurant Association to enact nutrition reforms similar to those she has worked out with Walmart and the nation's schools, the New York Times reports. The first lady is pushing for restaurants to serve smaller portions and make sure that kids' menus provide more fruits and vegetables and less saturated fat and sugar. More»

(NEWSER) - Wal-Mart is embarking on a plan that could have a big impact on American nutrition: It will modify its house brand to make the food healthier, and lower costs for items such as fruits and veggies, and products made with whole grain. The initiative is the result of collaboration with Michelle Obama, reports the New York Times . "It's a victory for parents. It's a victory for families, but most of all, it's a victory for our children," she said at today's announcement, notes ABC News . More»
