(NEWSER) - In the most substantial effort yet to hold the Vatican's feet to the fire for clergy sexual abuse, human rights lawyers will file a complaint today asking the International Criminal Court to investigate and prosecute Pope Benedict XVI and three top Vatican officials for crimes against humanity. According to the filing, prepared by the Center for Constitutional Rights and the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, the officials covered up the abuse of children. The Vatican, however, has said that the church is decentralized and that accusations of abuse are handled by bishops, reports the New York Times. More»

Boston Archdiocese Lists Accused Priests

159 clerics on list; 91 others omitted

(NEWSER) - Nearly a decade after a sexual abuse scandal erupted in the Archdiocese of Boston, Cardinal Sean O'Malley has released a list of 159 clerics accused of abusing children. The list was compiled using files that go back as far as 70 years, but the archdiocese has come under fire for omitting the names of 91 other priests, most of whom are now deceased, the Boston Globe reports. The names of priests from religious orders and other dioceses accused of molesting Boston-area children were also omitted. More»

Vatican Issues New Sex Abuse Rules

Rules also declare ordaining a woman a 'grave crime'

(NEWSER) - The Vatican has released new rules for dealing with sexual abuse from priests, mandating a set of “more rapid procedures” to expedite the “most urgent” cases, and extending the statute of limitations from 10 years beyond the victim's 18th birthday to 20 years. It also formally outlawed child pornography and sexually abusing the mentally ill, equating the latter with child abuse. It also names another “grave crime” to be reported to the Vatican in much the same way: Trying to ordain a woman. More»
