(AP) - Auschwitz's notorious "Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work Sets You Free) sign is back in one piece again after undergoing a painstaking restoration, reports the AP . Thieves cut the sign into pieces, and twisted and crushed parts of it during a 2009 theft, according to a reparations leader. Officials at the site in southern Poland said the original sign will probably be moved to an exhibition hall under development. A replica presently stands in its place. More»

Polanski Must Be Sentenced in LA: Judge

Fugitive director can't learn fate in 1977 rape case in absentia

(NEWSER) - Roman Polanski can't remain under house arrest in Switzerland while he's sentenced in Los Angeles for statutory rape committed in 1977—he must appear in court in the US, a superior court judge ruled today. "I have made it clear he needs to surrender," said Peter Espinoza. "In defense of the integrity of the justice system, he needs to surrender." The fugitive director's legal team plans to appeal, the Los Angeles Times reports. More»

Court suggested procedure as solution to stalemate

(NEWSER) - Roman Polanski today asked a Los Angeles judge to sentence him in absentia for his 1977 conviction for statutory rape—a move suggested earlier by an appellate court after it dismissed the director’s request to have the charges dismissed. Polanski, 76, is under house arrest in Switzerland as a judge there decides whether to extradite him to the US. More»

Polish Cops Find Auschwitz Sign Cut Into 3 Pieces

5 men in custody after nationwide search

(NEWSER) - The infamous sign stolen last week from the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz has been recovered, and five men are under arrest, Polish police said tonight. The sign, which reads "Arbeit Macht Frei" ("work makes you free"), had been cut into three pieces, one holding each word. The men, aged 25 to 39, were captured in northern Poland and have been moved to Krakow, in the southern part of the country about 40 miles from Auschwitz, the Guardian reports. More»
