(NEWSER) - As the House prepares to consider a repeal of health care reform, the Obama administration has released a startling statistic: Up to 129 million non-elderly Americans have pre-existing health conditions. That means anywhere from one-fifth to one-half of people under age 65 in the US are at risk of being charged more, or rejected entirely, by insurance companies, the Washington Post reports. (NEWSER) - The insurance industry, faced with an outraged administration, has retreated from efforts to deny sick children with pre-existing conditions coverage until 2014. Health secretary Kathleen Sebelius plans to issue regulations in the coming weeks making it clear that sick children must be given access to their parents' insurance plans by September at the latest, the Wall Street Journal reports. Firms say loophole lets them exclude youths, hike prices

(NEWSER) - Insurance companies say there’s a loophole in the health care reform legislation that will allow them to keep denying coverage to children with preexisting conditions for years. President Obama had promised that such denials would be “banned forever” this year. But “the fine print differs from the larger political message,” one insurance lawyer tells the New York Times . While insurers must cover preexisting conditions for any children they insure, they don’t actually have to insure them in the first place. More»

Health Reform Could Mean More Treatment Denials

None of the current bills force insurers to actually treat patients

(NEWSER) - Health care reform would force insurers to accept everyone, even those with pre-existing conditions; but it wouldn’t actually force them to treat those patients. None of the reform bills pending on Capitol Hill would restrict insurers’ ability to deny procedures for their customers, the LA Times reports. In fact, because they’ll have to take on sick patients, insurers will likely turn down even more claims as a way of controlling costs. More»
