(NEWSER) - Despite the nasty weather Hurricane Irene hurled at Arlington, Virginia, over the weekend, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery was still guarded. The 3rd US Infantry Regiment posted photos from the weekend on Facebook , noting that “members of The Old Guard have guarded the Tomb every second, of every day regardless of weather or holidays since April 6, 1948.” More pictures here . As mass grave is investigated, at least 4 sets of remains unidentifiable

(NEWSER) - Thanks to advances in DNA science, many thought that the “unknown soldier” was a thing of the past, but now Arlington National Cemetery finds itself, once again, with multiple unknowns to bury. Of the eight sets of remains found in a single grave in October, only three have been identified while four were found to be unidentifiable. Investigators are still trying to determine the identity of the final set, which was found along with a letter and photo of a cheerleader, the Washington Post reports. More»

(NEWSER) - The Army has launched yet another criminal probe into Arlington National Cemetery, after eight urns marked “unknown” were found in a single grave. Bodies are misplaced or mixed up disturbingly often at Arlington, but this is the first time that it’s sparked a criminal probe. “When there’s eight sets of human remains in one grave, it’s most likely not a mistake,” explained one army investigator. Senate panel blasts 'incompetent' cemetery chiefs

(NEWSER) - The number of mismarked, unmarked, and mislabeled graves in Arlington National Cemetery could be as high as 6,600 out of 330,000 graves, a Senate hearing heard yesterday. Subcommittee chair Claire McAskill slammed the "catastrophic incompetence" of cemetery officials, the Los Angeles Times reports. "Waste, abuse, fraud—we've got the trifecta, and we have it concerning a national treasure," the Democrat said. More»
