(NEWSER) - A California woman is turning to the state legislature for help after she was ordered to pay alimony to the ex-husband convicted of sexually assaulting her. Crystal Harris, 39, told the judicial committee of the State Assembly yesterday that the 2010 court judgment "amounted to making a rape victim write a check to her own rapist every month." Assembly member Toni Atkins has introduced a bill that would keep any victim of a violent sex crime from having to pay alimony to the abusive former spouse. "Most logical people hear this and think, 'You've got to be kidding,' " Atkins tells ABC News . "It makes a mockery of the intent of laws that govern a fair division of assets." More»

2 USC Students Shot at Party

Thief opens fire near campus: cops

(NEWSER) - Two students from the University of Southern California were shot at a party near the USC campus yesterday. Several students confronted a man who appeared to be stealing items from an apartment complex where the party was taking place. He opened fire, shooting a male student in the chest and a female student in the hand, said police. The male student underwent surgery and is listed in critical but stable condition. The group allegedly shipped drugs like Vicodin and Adderall from California to Brooklyn where web-savvy wholesalers pawned the pharm off to neighborhood yuppies, reports the New York Daily News . Pediatrician Filmed in Baby Sex Attacks: Cops

Detective describes doc's 'look of rage' during assaults

(NEWSER) - A 225-pound pediatrician videotaped himself sexually assaulting children as young as 3 months old in his examination rooms, according to Delaware court documents. During one brutal assault of a 2-year-old, Dr. Earl Bradley had a "violently enraged expression on his face," an investigator said in a sworn statement. The detective described the assaults as among the most "violent and brutal on a child of any age" that he had seen. More»
