Arson ruled out in felling of Florida's 'The Senator'

(NEWSER) - A historic cypress tree, thought to be one of the oldest in the world, is no more after catching fire and being destroyed early today. "The Senator," or "The Big Tree" as Central Floridians called it, was estimated to be 3,500 years old in 1946. "It's a nightmare," says a Seminole County Fire Rescue spokesperson. A state forestry official initially suspected arson, saying that it appeared that twigs and debris were deliberately ignited at the tree's base. (NEWSER) - Talk about taking your job a little too seriously. A pair of Domino's Pizza managers in Lake City, Florida, have been charged with burning down a rival Papa John's Pizza franchise, the Ocala Star-Banner reports. Police arrested one manager, Sean Everett Davidson, 23, on Thursday, and say he confessed to the Oct. 20 arson attack. Cops nabbed Bryan David Sullivan, 22, a day later and charged him with arson. Arsonist Busted After Leaving Fingertip at Scene

Cops found Ismael Ortiz, not surprisingly, at a hospital

(NEWSER) - Ismael Ortiz left something kinda important behind after allegedly setting a Florida home on fire: the tip of his finger. Police found the evidence inside a latex glove; a detective says Ortiz slammed his finger in a door while fleeing the scene. They found Ortiz, 24, at a local hospital, arrested him, and he quickly confessed, the Orlando Sentinel reports. They are now seeking a 58-year-old resident of the home who allegedly hired Ortiz to burn it down so he could collect renter’s insurance. More»

Corrupt judge took kickbacks from detention centers

(AP) - Pennsylvania's highest court today overturned hundreds of juvenile convictions issued by a corrupt judge who took millions of dollars in kickbacks from youth detention centers. The state Supreme Court ruled that former judge Mark Ciavarella violated the constitutional rights of youth offenders who appeared in his courtroom without lawyers between 2003 and 2008. More»

(NEWSER) - Fires that have raged across Florida over the last 2 days may have been deliberately set, Gov. Charlie Crist said today. Investigators have pointed to the fact that many of the blazes in different places sprang up at once as evidence of arson, CNN reports.
