(NEWSER) - One of the world's great foreign correspondents has died while covering the Syrian uprising. Anthony Shadid, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times correspondent, died from an apparent asthma attack a week after slipping across the border from Turkey to gather information on the resistance movement. Times photographer Tyler Hicks was with him and carried his body back to Turkey. Gender Segregation Grows in Israel

Separation is felt most in Jerusalem

(NEWSER) - Israel boasts a female opposition leader, high-profile women soldiers, and a female former prime minister. But walk the streets of Jerusalem these days and, in some areas, you’ll see gender-segregated sidewalks, buses, health clinics, and supermarkets—and few billboards or ads depicting women. The capital city has become increasingly segregated as ultra-Orthodox rabbis fight back against what they see as secularization, the AP reports. In one of several examples, the AP notes that Jerusalem debuted its long-awaited light rail with a big ad campaign this summer—one devoid of women's faces. More»

Iceland Best Nation for Women; US 19th

World Economic Forum releases annual rankings

(USER SUBMITTED) - Iceland leads the world in gender equality, says a new report from the World Economic Forum, with the United States rising 12 spots to 19th. Nordic nations again dominated the list, with Norway, Finland, and Sweden also near the top. Ireland, the UK, Germany, and Spain did well, but France plummeted into the 40s because of its lack of women in political power. The list also factors in education, health, and jobs. (NEWSER) - New York Times reporter James Risen is not a big fan of bloggers. Yahoo News blogger John Cook, formerly of Gawker, learned this when he called Risen to ask about criticism of his recent story on Afghan mineral deposits. (Original story here ; sample of criticism here .) "Do you even know anything about me?" Risen asked. "Maybe you were still in school when I broke the NSA story, I don't know. It was back when you were in kindergarten, I think." (Risen shared a Pulitzer in 2006 for a story on secret wiretapping. Cook was age 33.) More»

David Rohde begins first-person account of capture, escape

(NEWSER) - New York Times reporter David Rohde begins a gripping first-person account of his 7 months as a Taliban prisoner in Afghanistan before he managed to escape. In the first of the five-part series, he writes of his capture ("I waited for the sound of gunfire. I knew I might die but remained strangely calm"), his pleas for release ("I wept, hoping it would created sympathy"), and his revelations about the Taliban ("I came to a simple realization: After seven years of reporting in the region, I did not fully understand how extreme" and ambitious the group had become).
