It's an 'amazing' program, says one inmate

(NEWSER) - When it comes to behind-bars occupations, it’s not all license-plate-making anymore: At the Southern Desert Correctional Center, near Las Vegas, some 33 medium-security inmates show up Monday through Friday to restore vintage cars. "We've got a '56 Jaguar, a '48 Rolls Royce, and a Studebaker pickup," one inmate tells the Wall Street Journal . Customers bring their battered cars to the prison, where inmates return them to their former glory for up to $5.15 an hour. More»

Texas Prisons Cut Lunch on Weekends

Measure is designed to save money

(NEWSER) - Texas prisons are taking some heat over a decision to keep cooks out of their kitchens. Since April the state has been serving prisoners just two meals a day on weekends in some prisons, in an effort to cut food service costs, the New York Times reports. (Amusingly, the meal that is served between 5am and 7am is called brunch.) That puts the state out-of-step with American Correctional Association guidelines, which recommend three meals per day, with some variations allowed. But “I’ve never read the standard to mean you can do it every weekend,” the head of the Association says. More»

Group Sues to Stop Perry's Prayer Day

Texas governor shouldn't have endorsed event, group argues

(NEWSER) - The amusingly named Freedom from Religion Foundation isn't happy with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and it's filed a lawsuit claiming that he's violated the First Amendment ban on government-endorsed religion. Perry organized and promoted a Christian prayer event that the group of atheists and agnostics now wants canceled, the AP reports. The foundation says Perry should not be allowed to use his office to recognize the Aug. 6 event, called The Response. More»

Inmate Demands California Pay for Sex Change

Lyralisa Stevens sues for surgery to move to safer women's prison

(NEWSER) - A murderer is suing California, demanding the state pay for her sex change operation and move her from a men's prison to a safer women's prison. The state has provided Lyralisa Stevens, who lives as a female, with sex hormones since 2003 when she began a 50 year-to-life sentence for shooting a woman in a dispute over clothing. But officials say they are not responsible for financing and arranging an operation to remove her male genitalia. Stevens has had silicone injections in her hips and breasts, and is in constant fear of attack, according to the suit. "The male inmate is not expecting to see breasts in the shower next to him," wrote Stevens. More»

(NEWSER) - Excerpts from a new book provide a glimpse into Amanda Knox 's life "in limbo"—otherwise known as an Italian prison. The as-yet released book, Take Me With You, chronicles the convicted killer's life behind bars and her hopes for the future. "I miss my family. I have friends who are like brothers and sisters to me," the author, Rocco Girlanda, quotes Knox as saying. "I want to live." More»
