(NEWSER) - Awards season unofficially begins with tonight's Golden Globes ceremony, an alcohol-addled free-for-all that makes the Oscar telecast feel like a prayer meeting. Breeanna Hare of CNN runs down 10 reasons the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's shindig beats the Academy Awards:

Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock established themselves as Academy Award favorites with victories in the leading dramatic role categories, as did Mo'Nique and Christoph Waltz of Inglourious Basterds in the supporting categories. (NEWSER) - If you were hoping to see who Ricky Gervais would skewer at next year's Golden Globes, sorry: The comic says that while he "had a blast" hosting Sunday's award show, he has directed his agent never to let him do it again. (NEWSER) - "So, where was I?" began Ricky Gervais, drink in hand, as he sauntered on stage to open the Golden Globes. "Nervous?" He wasted no time throwing out a few insults, noting that he was hosting the show on NBC, "America's third biggest network. Or is it fourth?" He moved on to the show itself, calling the Globes "just like the Oscars, except without all that esteem." More of the best lines from the night:

• "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton," Gervais said, going on to call them louder, drunker, and "more easily bought."

'Golden Globes' host makes a 'Beaver' joke...

(NEWSER) - While making a joke about "Jodie Foster's beaver" in his Golden Globes monologue, host Ricky Gervais noted that he hadn't seen it himself—and that he had "spoken to a lot of guys here, they haven't seen it either. That doesn't mean it's not any good." TMZ wonders whether Gervais was implying Foster is a lesbian—a longstanding Hollywood rumor the actress has not spoken about publicly.
