(NEWSER) - Iraq is looking to America to help it monitor its oil interests—sort of. The country is buying unarmed surveillance drones from the US that will scour Iraq's Persian Gulf waters, which Iran has spoken of blockading in the past and which the majority of Iraq's oil exports flow through, USA Today reports. There's no word on how many drones it's buying, or at what cost. US: We Won't Scrap Iraqi Police Training

But embassy in Baghdad doesn't deny program cuts

(NEWSER) - The US embassy in Baghdad today denied a New York Times report that Washington may scrap its Iraqi police training program, AFP reports. "The Police Development Program is a vital part of the US-Iraqi relationship and an effective means of standing by our Iraqi friends," an embassy rep said. But the embassy didn't deny that the US was cutting police training staff from 350 to 50 officers, or that $100 million had been spent on upgrading a police college that was subsequently abandoned. Looks like a Polish woman didn't rip out her ex-boyfriend's teeth...

(NEWSER) - If it sounds too good (or insane) to be true, more proof that it probably is. MSNBC reports that the wildly popular story of the Polish dentist who tore out her ex-boyfriend's teeth is a hoax. Though the story was replete with names (Anna Mackowiak and Marek Olszewski, respectively) and colorful quotes ("the b**** had emptied my mouth"), it began to unravel as soon as MSNBC placed a few calls to Poland. Baron Cohen's Latest Target: Washington

Invites DC to premiere at Robert Mugabe's

(NEWSER) - Either Robert Mugabe has taken a sudden interest in Hollywood, or Sacha Baron Cohen's up to something . Washington media and lobbyists have been receiving invitations to Baron Cohen's new film, The Dictator—supposedly from the leader of Zimbabwe himself. "President Robert Mugabe and the Ministry of Education, Sport, Art, and Culture invite you to the Premiere of The Dictator," they read, saying the event will take place at Mugabe's residence. The Washington Post called the number provided, and it is, in fact, the one for Zimbabwe's art ministry. But officials weren't aware of any screening; likewise, the Zimbabwean embassy reported knowing "nothing of this event." More»

New California Gold Rush: Searching for Meteorite Bits

Ancient space rock can fetch $1K a gram

(NEWSER) - The fireball that exploded over California last week did more than just produce a window-shaking sonic boom—it also scattered pieces of meteorite over, fittingly enough, a 30-square-mile portion of the state's Gold Country region. News of the extremely rare type of space rock sent scientists and treasure hunters alike to California, where the window for locating the rocks is brief—their chemistry could be changing, and they would be wiped away by heavy rain, the Los Angeles Times notes. "This is scientific gold," says one astronomer. "We want to learn about this asteroid." It's also something like gold to those who recover a piece, which can fetch $1,000 a gram. More»
