(NEWSER) - It goes without saying that violence has a negative impact on children—but a new study suggests that it can actually age their DNA by as much as seven to 10 years. Researchers examined children's telomeres—DNA sequences found at the ends of chromosomes that keep the chromosomes from unraveling—and found that they shortened more quickly in children who had been exposed to two or more types of violence, including witnessing domestic violence, being physically abused, or being bullied. (NEWSER) - New Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina came to power promising a "firm hand" against his country's worsening drug trafficking problems. But yesterday, Perez showed his hand, to some surprise: He called for drug legalization, not just in Guatemala but around Central America, reports the LA Times . "We're bringing the issue up for debate," he said at a meeting with El Salvador's president, who, though personally opposed, said he is willing to consider legalization. Colombia's president separately said he'd be open to the idea if the whole world agreed. Perez plans to raise the issue at a March meeting of Central American leaders. More»

Marston Hefner allegedly beat up Playmate of the Year Claire Sinclair

(NEWSER) - Hugh Hefner's son is making headlines, but not for a good reason: Marston, Hef's 21-year-old son, was arrested last night for allegedly attacking last year's Playmate of the Year … who also just so happens to be his girlfriend. Police were called to the California pad where the younger Hefner lives with Claire Sinclair, 20, after a Sinclair family member called 911. Sinclair was visibly injured, law enforcement sources tell TMZ , and she told police Hefner punched and kicked her and then blocked her from leaving. Hefner admitted to an argument, but denied hitting Sinclair, whom he has been dating on-and-off since 2010. More»

(AP) - The former top cop of a major Chinese city has dropped from sight amid unconfirmed reports he is seeking US asylum following a quarrel with one of China's most powerful local politicians. Wang Lijun, a crusading lawman who made his name busting crime gangs and inspired a drama on state TV (called Iron-Blooded Police Spirits), has taken leave to recover from anxiety and overwork, the city government of Chongqing said in a statement today.
