(AP) - Coast Guard crews saw no signs today that the pilot of a small plane survived when it went down in the Gulf of Mexico about three hours after two F-15 fighter jets tried to make contact with him. The plane landed right-side up on the ocean surface and had been floating right after the crash, said the Coast Guard chief. Planes reportedly did not see a life raft deploy or anything to indicate the pilot—the lone person aboard—was alive. The military pilots reported that the plane's windshield had been iced over. Officials resume search thwarted by fog in Mobile Bay

(NEWSER) - Rescuers are this morning again attempting to access the wreckage of an MH-65C Coast Guard helicopter that went down in Alabama's Mobile Bay last night, having been thwarted by foggy conditions in the search for three missing crew members. Divers overnight failed to gain entry to the wreckage, which rests in about 13 feet of water, reports the AP, but will try again as visibility improves. 7 Marines Dead in Ariz. Helicopter Collision

Occurred during a training exercise last night

(NEWSER) - More tragedy for US troops today: Seven Marines are dead after two helicopters collided near Yuma, Arizona, last night. The Corps said the AH-1W Cobra and UH-1Y Huey were participating in a training exercise around 8pm when the accident occurred. The choppers were part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The Arizona Republic reports that the accident is being investigated. The AP adds that teams reportedly train along the Arizona-California border because it mimics conditions in Afghanistan. The names of the dead won't be released for at least 24 hours. More»

Investigators seeking cause

(NEWSER) - A Marine was killed and 5 others injured when a helicopter went down during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County. It wasn't immediately clear how serious the injuries were, but all were being treated at local hospitals, reports AP. Investigators are seeking the cause of the crash of the "Yankee Huey" helicopter. The UH-1Y craft is an updated version of an earlier model that boasts "crashworthy" crew seats. More»
