(NEWSER) - After a long wait , Mickey’s new home in China is officially under construction. The iconic mouse joined Disney CEO Robert Iger and top Shanghai officials—as well as Goofy, Princess Jasmine, and other friends—for a groundbreaking ceremony today at the future site of Shanghai Disneyland, the Los Angeles Times reports. The $3.7 billion undertaking marks “a defining moment in our company's history,” Iger told crowds. It will be “both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese.” More»

Disney to Slash Theme Park Jobs

Company announces layoffs, major restructuring of park operations

(NEWSER) - Tomorrowland holds unemployment for an undisclosed number of Disney employees, reports the Orlando Sentinel. The company is restructuring its theme park division—which employs 80,000 people—and plans to cut jobs by consolidating its East and West Coast operations. Analysts believe Disney can make substantial savings this way but warn that turning around the firm's falling profits will be harder if it cuts too many creative jobs. More»

Starbucks Is Coming to Disneyland

Cafes will open in California, Florida theme parks

(AP) - Starbucks is about to perk up "the happiest place on Earth." The Seattle-based coffee chain is today announcing a partnership to open a store inside each of the six Disney properties in California and Florida. The first will open this summer at Disneyland California Adventure in Anaheim. The other locations will be at the nearby Disneyland Park and at the parks in Orlando, Fla.: Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot. Starbucks opened a store in Disney Village at Disneyland Paris in June 2009, but this is the first time the coffee chain will have a store inside the theme park. More»

(NEWSER) - Economic struggles around the globe aren’t stopping Disney’s plans to build a $3.59 billion theme park in China, the Wall Street Journal reports. After years of wrangling, the entertainment firm and Shanghai officials agreed this week to send a proposal to the Chinese government for what would be the biggest-ever foreign investment in the nation. The struggling economy could actually help its prospects because the park would create 50,000 jobs. More»
