(NEWSER) - A Chicago TV station has apologized for quoting a 4-year-old boy out of context—in a way that just happened to make him sound like a wannabe gangster. A journalist reporting on a drive-by shooting that killed two teens in the boy's neighborhood asked him: "When you get older are you going to stay away from all these guns?" The boy responded "No," and said when he gets older, "I'm going to have me a gun!" The station ended the clip there, making no mention of the fact that the boy added, "I'm going to be the police!" (NEWSER) - Sarah Palin has called Joe McGinniss, the author who moved in next door, a “stalker,” so couldn't she just take out a restraining order on him? Nope, sorry. (NEWSER) - Eliot Spitzer deserves another chance at political office even though he spent taxpayer money on trysts with a hooker, said embattled New York Governor David Paterson. The man who once served as Spitzer's lieutenant governor boasted that he personally has made a point of hiring talented individuals with mistakes in their past. Paterson said he hoped the same kind of "standard will be extended to Gov. Spitzer, who had tremendous talent, and I hope will be able to exercise it." More»

Another Daily Beast Writer Accused of Plagiarism

Beast lashes out at Gawker, demands retraction

(NEWSER) - Another Daily Beast columnist has been accused of uncredited borrowing. This time, it’s senior political columnist John Avalon, who, in his new Beast-published book Wingnuts, lifts quotes from Salon columnist Alexander Zaitchik’s reporting on Glenn Beck. Hamilton Nolan of Gawker lays out all the instances here . Basically, Avalon didn’t swipe any of Zaitchik’s own prose, but he just happened to find the exact same obscure quotes on the Stormfront.org forums, edit them the same way, and use them in the same order. New York Times Reporter Caught Plagiarizing

Business writer copied from Wall Street Journal , other sources

(NEWSER) - A New York Times business reporter has been caught cribbing text directly from the Wall Street Journal and other sources, the Times sheepishly admitted in an editor’s note today. The Times says the Journal alerted them to uncanny similarities between a Journal article published Feb. 5, and a Times DealBook blog post by Zachery Kouwe that went up two hours later. Though the Times studiously avoids the word “plagiarism” it says “several passages are repeated almost exactly.” More»
