(NEWSER) - The New York Times last month revealed that undercover US agents have laundered and smuggled millions of dollars for Mexico's drug cartels—and today the paper shines a light on one such operation, in which federal agents helped one drug trafficker and his Colombian supplier move cash and cocaine across international borders. Over a period of months in 2007, US and Mexican agents worked with that supplier—Harold Mauricio Poveda-Ortega, aka "The Rabbit"—who fed cocaine to cartel leader Arturo Beltran Levya, the New York Times reports. Half of those nabbed in multi-city raids have Mexican cartel links

(NEWSER) - A vast multi-city gang sweep shows the extent to which Mexican drug cartels have penetrated American cities—and, say federal officials, the extent to which the government is willing to go to take them down. Some 678 gang members, including 421 nationals, were busted in 168 cities during Project Southern Tempest, ABC reports. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities say nearly half of those arrested were linked to Mexican drug gangs. More»

Tijuana raids net huge stash, some in Homer Simpson packaging

(NEWSER) - Mexican authorities have made the biggest marijuana bust in years. Some 10,000 packages of pot weighing a total of 105 tons—some of it wrapped in Homer Simpson packaging—were seized in pre-dawn raids in Tijuana, the BBC reports. Gangs had been planning to smuggle the dope into the US, say officials. Eleven people were busted, and one suspect and a police officer were wounded during exchanges of gunfire during the raids. Mexico Tallies 69 Murders in Single Day

Mexicans live in fear of grotesque killings

(NEWSER) - Mexico kicked off 2010 with a grim record: On Saturday the violence-plagued country tallied 69 murders in a single day. As drug cartels stepped up retaliation against the government's war on trafficking, Saturday's count included 26 murders in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and 13 in Mexico City. Murders are also becoming increasingly grotesque: Last week one victim's face was peeled off and sewn to a soccer ball, and yesterday the remains of a slain police officer were found in two separate ice chests. Hiring rush making it easier for cartels to corrupt agency

(NEWSER) - The US Border Patrol has been stepping up its efforts to recruit agents and so have the Mexican cartels. Investigators say the traffickers, faced with tightened, high-tech security along the border, are trying to corrupt border agents any way they can and to plant their own people in jobs. The recent hiring spree has made it easier for the cartels to infiltrate the agency, officials say. More»
