(NEWSER) - The Dow climbed 99.5 points today on the strength of the GM settlement and speculation that billionaire Warren Buffett might buy 20% of beleaguered Bear Stearns. The brokerage helped spur the biggest gain in a week, jumping 7.7% after the Buffett story circulated. Said a trader, “You can’t go wrong with a guy like that behind you.” GM surged 9.4% after settling its contract with the UAW, Bloomberg reports. More»

Buffett's Latest Buy: 63 More Newspapers

In $142M deal

(AP) - Billionaire Warren Buffett's company is making its largest foray into newspapers yet, agreeing to buy 63 papers from Media General Inc. The $142 million deal includes the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Winston-Salem Journal. The company is selling all its papers except those in Tampa, most importantly the Tampa Tribune. Media General says it is in talks with others for those papers. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has owned the Buffalo News for decades and recently bought its hometown paper , the Omaha World-Herald. Buffett Feels 'Terrific' Despite Prostate Cancer

Berkshire shareholders seem to believe him

(AP) - Warren Buffett insists that he's feeling good after his recent prostate cancer diagnosis. Based on the questions he got at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting, shareholders are taking him at his word. Despite the fact that Buffett just disclosed his cancer diagnosis last month, he didn't face the first question about his health until well into this morning's questioning. Many of the questions at the meeting either focused in on technical aspects of Berkshire's many businesses or dealt with general economic or political topics. More»

Berkshire Picks Successor for Warren Buffett

But CEO doesn't plan to step down anytime soon

(NEWSER) - The big news out of Warren Buffett's annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders is that he's finally picked a successor, reports the Wall Street Journal . He's just not saying who it is. Buffett, 81, also wrote that he is in "excellent health" and "isn't going anywhere" anytime soon. The lack of a definitive successor had been a worry for investors the last few years, notes the Journal. Buffett said the company has two back-up options if choice No. 1 doesn't take the job.
