Muslim soldier accused of bomb plot yells out in court

(NEWSER) - The US soldier who allegedly planned to bomb Fort Hood military base had a disruptive and defiant court appearance today, reports the AP . Pfc. Naser Abdo would not stand up when asked and yelled "Nidal Hasan Fort Hood 2009" as he was leaving, referring to the Army psychiatrist accused of shooting up the base. Authorities arrested Abdo—a 21-year-old native of Texas who converted to Islam when he was 17—at a motel near Fort Hood earlier this week. He was AWOL at the time. More»

Nidal Hasan has first appearance, wins delay

(AP) - Wearing his Army uniform and sitting solemnly in a wheelchair, the psychiatrist accused of gunning down 13 people at Fort Hood in November made his first court appearance today, and his attorneys won a delay in his case. Maj. Nidal Hasan did not speak much at the hearing, mostly answering questions about the proceedings with a soft "yes sir." The next hearing, at which a judge will determine whether the case goes to trial, is now scheduled for Oct. 4. More»

Review finds Hasan's shortcomings ignored

(NEWSER) - Up to eight army officers may be disciplined for errors of judgment ahead of the deadly Fort Hood shooting rampage, according to an official familiar with a Pentagon review of the incident. The review found that officers allowed accused shooter Nidal Malik Hasan's career to advance despite his erratic behavior and failure to meet required standards for physical fitness, appearance and work ethic, the official tells the Los Angeles Times. Funerals take place across the country

(NEWSER) - Funerals for several of the 13 victims of the Fort Hood shooting took place today across the nation. Friends, family, and community members laid to rest Staff Sgt. Justin DeCrow, Spc. Jason Dean Hunt, Staff Sgt. Amy Krueger, Pfc. Aaron Thomas Nemelka, Capt. John Gaffaney, and Pfc. Michael Pearson.
