(NEWSER) - Nidal Hasan warned that "adverse events" could occur if Muslims weren't allowed to leave the US military in a bizarre presentation he gave to Army physicians in 2007 at the end of his residency at Walter Reed Medical Center. (NEWSER) - Church attendance was up today in the area around Fort Hood, Texas, where at least one congregation heard a somewhat unexpected appeal. "Lord, we pray for Major Hasan‘s family, who find themselves in a position no one wants to be in—to try and explain the unexplainable," said the chaplain leading the service. The nearest town to the base, Killeen, has one house of worship for every 245 residents, according to the Austin American-Statesman , and attendance at many appeared to be up. More»

(AP) - The Army psychiatrist accused of the Fort Hood shooting spree was so conflicted over what to tell fellow soldiers about fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan that a local Islamic leader was deeply troubled by it. The co-founder of the Islamic Community of Greater Killeen said Major Nidal Malik Hasan's persistent questioning prompted him to recommend that the mosque reject Hasan's request to become a lay Muslim leader at the Army post. Nidal Hasan has first appearance, wins delay

(AP) - Wearing his Army uniform and sitting solemnly in a wheelchair, the psychiatrist accused of gunning down 13 people at Fort Hood in November made his first court appearance today, and his attorneys won a delay in his case. Maj. Nidal Hasan did not speak much at the hearing, mostly answering questions about the proceedings with a soft "yes sir." The next hearing, at which a judge will determine whether the case goes to trial, is now scheduled for Oct. 4. More»
