(NEWSER) - A car bomb exploded today in a crowded bazaar in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's troubled North West Frontier Province, leaving at least 41 people dead and more than 100 injured. Many of the victims were in a passing bus that was reduced to a charred frame. Officials were uncertain whether the bomb was remote-controlled or triggered by a suicide bomber. Taliban take credit for blast at military training grounds

(AP) - A suicide bomber linked to the Pakistani Taliban attacked soldiers during morning exercises at an army training camp in the northwest today, killing 31 troops and wounding 42 others. There were conflicting accounts about the identity of the bomber: An examination of the body parts at the scene indicated the bomber was a teenage boy, which is a common finding in suicide bombings in Pakistan, said police. The army also confirmed he was a teenager in a school uniform. But the Pakistani Taliban claimed he was a soldier at the camp in Mardan town who volunteered "to sacrifice his life for Islam." More»

(USER SUBMITTED) - An Oregon man was arrested last night and charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction after trying to detonate a car bomb at a tree-lighting ceremony. Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a US citizen born in Somalia, drove a van to Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland and attempted to detonate a dummy explosive charge that had been rigged by the FBI, reports the Oregonian . "This defendant's chilling determination is a stark reminder that there are people—even here in Oregon—who are determined to kill Americans," said a state US attorney. More»

(NEWSER) - As Japan joined the list of countries issuing travel alerts for Europe, intelligence officials report that dozens of Muslim militants with European citizenship are believed to be training in Pakistan for terror missions—possibly in Europe. One senior Pakistani official puts the number of such extremists at "several dozen," and says at least one is a former F-16 pilot in the Turkish air force. (NEWSER) - At least 48 people, including many women and children, were killed when twin bombs exploded in a Lahore marketplace late yesterday. The fire sparked a huge blaze in the center of the Pakistani city, the BBC reports. Hours earlier, 10 people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a courthouse in Peshawar. More than 400 people have been killed in terrorist attacks since the Pakistani military began its offensive against Taliban strongholds last month. More»
