(NEWSER) - Democrats got ready for a health care rumble today, with Nancy Pelosi telling her troops to clear their schedules, be ready to stay in session, and expect a vote next week. Pelosi will move to pass the Senate's December bill as soon as Thursday or Friday, and though Politico reports that the speaker likely doesn't yet have the 216 votes she needs, most believe she's within reach. Dems hail first key step in 'historic victory'

(NEWSER) - A filibuster strategy by Senate Republicans against the health care reform bill was shot down early this morning in a move that clearly signals the measure's likely passage before Christmas. The Senate voted 60-40 for cloture to short-circuit a GOP tactic aimed at killing a package of changes to the bill. "Let's make history," said Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin shortly before bill supporters flexed their muscle at 1am on the Senate floor. The vote ended hours of acrimonious debate and a race to get snowbound senators to the Capitol, which prompted GOP Sen. Tom Coburn at one point to ask Americans to pray "that somebody can't make the vote tonight." More»

GOP: Congress, Prez Must Go On Public Option

(NEWSER) - In the circus that is the Senate these days, a couple of anti-public-option Republicans—Tom Coburn and David Vitter—rolled out an amendment to the health care bill Friday requiring members of Congress to enroll in any such plan that might come to pass. When Dems didn’t object—Sherrod Brown, Chris Dodd, and Al Franken tried to cosponsor, but were rebuffed—GOP senators upped the ante and added in the president. The amended amendment would extend the mandate to the whole executive branch. More»
