(NEWSER) - A number of people with histories of sexual misconduct have had little trouble getting new jobs in schools, despite a system of background checks intended to prevent exactly that, the Government Accountability Office reported yesterday. In 11 of the 15 cases federal investigators looked into, people who had previously targeted children were able to land school gigs—and in at least six of those cases, they went on to abuse more children. Law restricting location of where criminals can live is unconstitutional: court

(NEWSER) - Sex offenders can now live close to schools and playgournds in Los Angeles County, a California court has ruled. Sections of a law requiring convicted offenders to live away from areas where children congregate is unconstitutional, declared Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza. He said some sex offenders are left with a choice of jail or being homeless because large sections of some cities are off limits to them under the law. "Rather than protecting public safety, it appears that the sharp rise in homelessness rates in sex offenders on active parole in Los Angeles County actually undermines public safety," wrote Espinoza More»

(NEWSER) - A fringe candidate for California governor wading into deep waters is pitching a plan to ship pedophiles to an an island unless they either promise to leave California forever or spend the rest of their lives in prison. Under the plan, they'd be shipped to Santa Rosa Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park, which is currently appreciated only by "park rangers and environmentalists" and a "waste of taxpayer money" to maintain, claims candidate Douglas Hughes. MySpace Axes Profile of Sex Murder Suspect

Man charged in teen's death listed as 'Jason Stud'

(NEWSER) - Turns out a MySpace user with a sexy profile is a registered sex offender who has been charged with the rape and murder of California teenager Chelsea King. MySpace has now removed the profile of John Albert Gardner, who used a fake name, email and hometown to register his account. The profile lists his name as "Jason Stud" and "Energizer Bunny," names the Playboy Mansion as his hometown, and lists CSI and Bones among his favorite TV shows, AP notes. More»
