(NEWSER) - The Army has filed court-martial charges against Alexis Hutchinson, an Army cook who refused to deploy to Afghanistan because she couldn't find anyone to look after her 1-year-old son. Being banned from combat "solely on the basis of sex" violates their Fifth Amendment rights and "restricts their current and future earnings, their potential for promotion and advancement, and their future retirement benefits," wrote Command Sergeant Major Jane Baldwin and Colonel Ellen Haring in their lawsuit. 100 homes evacuated after dummy Hellfire drops

(NEWSER) - The Army is investigating how a dummy Hellfire missile managed to become detached from an Apache helicopter to fall in a Texas neighborhood on Tuesday. A soldier's kids spotted the missile as it fell into a field around 8pm and told their dad, who contacted the military. Some 100 homes in Killeen, near Fort Hood, were evacuated for close to an hour while Army technicians examined the missile and determined it was inert, reports AP . More»

(NEWSER) - The sad and strange tale of the US Army captain who died while Skyping with his wife gets even more mysterious: Army investigators say they found no bullet wound or any evidence of foul play in Bruce Kevin Clark’s death, but wife Susan Orellana-Clark has suggested her husband may have been shot. "Clark was suddenly knocked forward," reads a family statement released yesterday . "The closet behind him had a bullet hole in it.” Others, “including a member of the military, who rushed to the home of Clark's wife, also saw the hole and agreed it was a bullet hole." More»

Army Nurse in Afghanistan Dies While Skyping With Wife

Cpt. Bruce Clark worked at Afghanistan medical center

(NEWSER) - An Army nurse in Afghanistan died Monday in the middle of a Skype conversation with his wife, the El Paso Times reports. The cause of Cpt. Bruce Clark's death has not been disclosed by the Army; an investigation is underway. "Bruce's wife tragically witnessed her husband's death during one of their regular Skype video chats," said a statement from the family. "At the time of the incident, the family was hoping for a rescue and miracle, but later learned that it was not to be." Still, "Bruce's wife and extended family will be forever thankful that he and his wife were together in his last moments." More»
